Application 1: 
Openings--leading into ducts within a ceiling space--that penetrate a membrane ceiling forming part of an assembly assigned a fire-resistance rating on the basis of Appendix D, where:
  • the ducts are sheet steel, and
  • the amount of openings and their protection conform to the requirements of Appendix D.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that openings into rated ceiling membranes will contribute to the spread of fire within the ceiling space, which could lead to the failure and collapse of the structure within the ceiling space, which could lead to harm to persons.
