Application 1: 
Fire exposure test criteria for fire stopping materials used to separate concealed spaces into compartments, in the locations stated in:
  • Sentence 3.1.11.1.(1), which applies to the separation of interior wall, ceiling and crawl spaces from exterior walls and attic or roof spaces,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.2.(1), which applies to wall assemblies,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.3.(1), which applies where wood nailing elements are used in buildings required to be of noncombustible construction,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.3.(2), which applies where wood members are used in buildings required to be of noncombustible construction,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.4.(1), which applies to vertical and horizontal spaces,
  • Article 3.1.11.5., which applies to attic or roof spaces, balconies and canopies, and
  • Sentence 3.1.11.6.(1), which applies to crawl spaces.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], for fire stops required by Articles 9.10.16.1. and 9.10.16.2., as stated in Clause 9.10.16.3.(1)(g).
Exceptions: 
except as permitted by:
  • Sentence 3.1.11.7.(2), which applies to gypsum board and sheet steel having a certain minimum thickness,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.7.(3), which applies to wood nailing elements used in buildings required to be of noncombustible construction,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.7.(4), which applies to certain fire stop materials used to separate concealed spaces, and
  • Sentence 3.1.11.7.(7), which applies to semi-rigid fibre insulation board produced from glass, rock or slag used to block the vertical space in a double stud wall assembly formed at the intersection of the floor assembly and the walls.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that inappropriate criteria will be stated for the testing of fire stopping material, which could lead to the use of inappropriate material, which could lead to the material not remaining in place for a certain minimum amount of time when subjected to fire conditions, which could lead to the failure of the material to resist the passage of flame, which could lead to the spread of fire within spaces that are fire stopped, which could lead to harm to persons.
