Application
Application 1: 
Protection of openings through fire stopping materials referred to in Sentences 3.1.11.7.(1) to (4), in locations as stated in:
  • Sentence 3.1.11.1.(1), which applies to the separation of interior wall, ceiling and crawl spaces from exterior walls and attic or roof spaces,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.2.(1), which applies to wall assemblies,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.3.(1), which applies where wood nailing elements are used in buildings required to be of noncombustible construction,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.3.(2), which applies where wood members are used in buildings required to be of noncombustible construction,
  • Sentence 3.1.11.4.(1), which applies to vertical and horizontal spaces,
  • Article 3.1.11.5., which applies to attic or roof spaces, balconies and canopies, and
  • Sentence 3.1.11.6.(1), which applies to crawl spaces.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] for fire stops required in Articles 9.10.16.1. and 9.10.16.2., as stated in Clause 9.10.16.3.(1)(g).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that openings in fire stopping materials used to separate compartments will not be protected, which could lead to the failure of the integrity of the separation between compartments, which could lead to the spread of fire from one compartment to another, which could lead to damage to the building.
