ObjectiveOS1 Fire Safety

Application
Application 1: 
Fire separation, fire-resistance rating, type of construction and sprinkler requirements for buildings that contain more than one major occupancy.
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • as exempted in Sentence 3.2.2.8.(1), which applies when:
    • the aggregate area of all major occupancies in a particular Group or Division does not exceed 10% of the floor area on the storey on which they are located, and
    • buildings are not classified as a Group F, Division 1 or Division 2 occupancies,
  • as exempted in Article 3.2.2.7., which applies to superimposed major occupancies, and
  • as required by Article 3.2.2.18. for a storey below a storey that is required to be sprinklered.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that inadequate fire safety features will contribute to the spread of fire or collapse, which could lead to the failure of the integrity of a fire separation or structural element, which could lead to the spread of fire and smoke or collapse, which could lead to harm to persons.
