Application
Application 1:
Fire-resistance rating of floor assemblies and of their supporting loadbearing walls, columns and arches of heavy timber construction in a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 1 major occupancy. This applies in buildings that:
  • are not more than 1 storey in building height,
  • have less than 40% of the area of the building as 2 storeys for the purpose of:
    • the development of productions, including the preparation of scenery and costumes and rehearsal of performers,

    • the preparation by performers for a performance,
    • managerial functions, or
    • toilets, rest rooms and similar public facilities,
  • have no occupancy above or below the auditorium other than one which serves it or is dependent on it,
  • are not more than 600 m2 in building area, and
  • have an occupant load of not more than 600.
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Exceptions:
except:
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 1 major occupancy but the building complies with the conditions of Article 3.2.2.22.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 1 major occupancy but in addition has more than 10% of the area classified as a major occupancy that has more stringent requirements in accordance with Articles 3.2.2.20. or 3.2.2.22. to 3.2.2.83., and

Intent
Intent 1:
To exempt heavy timber floor assemblies and their supporting elements from the requirement to have a 45 min fire-resistance rating, on the basis that experience has shown that this type of construction provides an adequate degree of resistance to failure or collapse from exposure to fire.
