Application
Application 1: 
Fire separation requirements and fire-resistance rating of floor assemblies and of their supporting loadbearing walls, columns and arches in a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 2 major occupancy. This applies in buildings that have no restrictions on building height or building area.
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Application 2: 
This also applies to:
  • a floor assembly over a basement, subject to a minimum fire-resistance rating of 45 min, as provided in ArticleArticle 3.2.1.4.,
  • a portion of a roof assembly that supports an occupancy, as provided in Sentence 3.2.2.13.(1), and
  • a mezzanine that is required to be considered as a storey in determining building height, as stated in Sentence 3.2.1.6.(1).
Exceptions: 
except:
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 2 major occupancy but the building complies with the conditions of Articles 3.2.2.24., 3.2.2.25., 3.2.2.26., 3.2.2.27. or 3.2.2.28.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 2 major occupancy but in addition has more than 10% of the area classified as a major occupancy that has more stringent requirements in accordance with Articles 3.2.2.20. to 3.2.2.22. and 3.2.2.24. to 3.2.2.83., and
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 2 major occupancy but also has a portion of its floor area used for a Group F, Division 1 or 2 occupancy.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that loadbearing walls, columns and arches exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse, which could lead to the failure or collapse of supported floor assemblies during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that floor assemblies exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 3: 
To limit the probability that loadbearing walls, columns and arches exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse, which could lead to the failure or collapse of supported floor assemblies, which could lead to the spread of fire from a lower storey of a building to an upper storey or to the exterior during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 4: 
To limit the probability that floor assemblies exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse, which could lead to the spread of fire from a lower storey of a building to an upper storey or to the exterior of the building during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
