Application
Application 1: 
Fire-resistance rating of roof assemblies and of their supporting loadbearing walls, columns and arches in a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 3 major occupancy. This applies in buildings that:
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 3 major occupancy but the building complies with the conditions of Articles 3.2.2.31., 3.2.2.32., 3.2.2.33. or 3.2.2.34.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group A, Division 3 major occupancy but in addition has more than 10% of the area classified as a major occupancy that has more stringent requirements in accordance with Articles 3.2.2.20. to 3.2.2.29. and 3.2.2.31. to 3.2.2.83., and
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group F, Division 3 major occupancy but also has a portion of its floor area used for a Group F, Division 1 or 2 occupancy.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To exempt heavy timber roof assemblies and their supporting elements from the requirement to have a 45 min fire-resistance rating, on the basis that experience has shown that this type of construction provides an adequate degree of resistance to failure or collapse from exposure to fire.
