(a) [F03-OS1.2] Applies to the requirement that noncombustible floor assemblies be fire separations.
Application
Application 1: 
Fire separation requirements of noncombustible floor assemblies in a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group D major occupancy. This applies in buildings that:
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Application 2: 
This also applies to:
  • a floor assembly over a basement, subject to a minimum fire-resistance rating of 45 min, as provided in Article 3.2.1.4.,
  • a portion of a roof assembly that supports an occupancy, as provided in Sentence 3.2.2.13.(1), and
  • a mezzanine that is required to be considered as a storey in determining building height, as stated in Sentence 3.2.1.6.(1).
Exceptions: 
except:
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group D major occupancy but the building complies with the conditions of Article 3.2.2.56.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group D major occupancy but in addition has more than 10% of the area classified as a major occupancy that has more stringent requirements in accordance with Articles 3.2.2.20. to 3.2.2.54. and 3.2.2.56. to 3.2.2.83., and
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group D major occupancy but also has a portion of its floor area used for a Group F, Division 1 or 2 occupancy.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that floor assemblies exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse, which could lead to the spread of fire from a lower storey of a building to an upper storey or to the exterior of the building during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
