Application
Application 1: 
Fire-resistance rating of roof assemblies and of their supporting loadbearing walls, columns and arches in a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group F, Division 3 major occupancy. This applies in buildings that:
This applies to buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group F, Division 3 major occupancy but the building complies with the conditions of Articles 3.2.2.75., 3.2.2.76., 3.2.2.77., 3.2.2.78., 3.2.2.79., 3.2.2.80., 3.2.2.81., 3.2.2.82. or 3.2.2.83.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group F, Division 3 major occupancy but in addition has more than 10% of the area classified as a major occupancy that has more stringent requirements in accordance with Articles 3.2.2.20. to 3.2.2.73. and 3.2.2.75. to 3.2.2.83.,
  • a storey in which more than 10% of the area is classified as a Group F, Division 3 major occupancy but also has a portion of its floor area used for a Group F, Division 1 or 2 occupancy,
  • as provided in Sentence 3.2.2.13.(1), which requires a roof assembly that supports an occupancy to be constructed in accordance with the fire separation requirements for floor assemblies, and
  • as provided in Sentences 3.2.2.14.(2) and (4), which apply to the minimum fire-resistance rating of roof-top enclosures for elevator machinery rooms, service rooms and stairways.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that loadbearing walls, columns and arches exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse, which could lead to the failure or collapse of a supported roof assembly during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.

To limit the probability that a roof assembly exposed to fire will prematurely fail or collapse during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons.
