Application 1: 
Installation and location of [fire alarm system] annunciators in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A in which fire alarm systems are installed.
Exceptions: 
except as exempted in:
  • Sentence 3.2.4.8.(3), which applies to fire alarm systems that do not require more than one zone indicator [see Sentence 3.2.4.8.(2)],
  • Sentence 3.2.4.8.(4), which applies when visual and audible trouble signal devices are provided inside the main entrance of the building, and
  • Sentence 3.2.4.8.(5), which applies to unsprinklered buildings of not more than 3 storeys and having an aggregate area of not more than 2 000 m2.
Application 2: 
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] in which fire alarm systems are installed, as stated in Sentence 9.10.18.6.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that emergency responders will be delayed in locating the annunciator, which could lead to delays in determining the zone of annunciation and the area of fire origin, which could lead to delays or ineffectiveness in carrying out fire emergency response operations, which could lead to:
  • delays in evacuation or moving to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders, and
  • the spread of fire, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders.
Intent 2: 
To direct Code users to Sentence 3.2.5.5.(1) for requirements pertaining to access routes.
