Self-contained emergency lighting units used for emergency lighting required by Subsection 3.2.7. [Article 3.2.7.3.] in:

• exits,
• principal routes providing access to exits in open floor areas,
• corridors used by the public,
• corridors serving patients' sleeping rooms,
• corridors serving classrooms,
• underground walkways,
• public corridors,
• service spaces referred to in Sentence 3.2.1.1.(8) [service spaces that are sufficiently large that workers can enter the space for construction, inspection, maintenance and repair of building services], and
• floor areas or parts thereof where the public may congregate in:
  • Group A, Division 1 occupancies, or
  • Group A, Division 2 and 3 occupancies having an occupant load of 60 or more.

This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.

To limit the probability that self-contained emergency lighting units will not meet proper standards, which could lead to such devices not performing as intended when there is a loss of normal power, which could lead to the inadequate illumination of exits, egress routes and certain areas in buildings, which could lead to safety hazards [bumping, tripping, falling, etc.], which could lead to harm to persons.

To limit the probability that self-contained emergency lighting units will not meet proper standards, which could lead to such devices not performing as intended when there is a loss of normal power in an emergency situation, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
