Application
Application 1: 
Weatherstripping of, or other smoke control measures for, doors acting as closures in the fire separations referred to in Clause 3.3.1.7.(1)(b) [fire separations used to divide a floor area into zones].
This applies to floor areas that:
  • are above or below the first storey,
  • are not sprinklered throughout,
  • have a barrier-free path of travel, as stated in Sentences 3.8.1.2.(1) and (2), 3.8.1.4.(1), 3.8.2.1.(1) and (2), and 3.8.2.2.(1), and Article 3.8.2.3., and
  • are divided into zones, as described in Clause 3.3.1.7.(1)(b).
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Sentence 3.8.1.1.(1), which applies to:
  • houses, including semi-detached houses, duplexes, triplexes, town houses, row houses and boarding houses,
  • buildings of Group F, Division 1 major occupancy, and
  • buildings that are not intended to be occupied on a daily or full-time basis, including automatic telephone exchanges, pumphouses and substations.
Application 2: 
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.5.2.2.(1).
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Article 9.5.2.3., which applies to apartment buildings.
Application 3: 
This also applies to tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that smoke will spread through door openings from one zone to another zone of the floor area, which could lead to harm to persons in the other zone.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that smoke will spread through door openings from one zone to another zone of the floor area, which could lead to fire emergency response operations involving the other zone being delayed or ineffective, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
