Application
Application 1:
Fire-resistance rating of fire separations required by Sentence 3.3.2.6.(1) that separate corridors used by the public in an assembly occupancy or corridors serving classrooms as an access to exit from the remainder of the building, where the floor areas in which the corridors are located are sprinklered throughout.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2:
This also applies to:

Intent
Intent 1:
To exempt corridor separations from the application of Sentence 3.3.2.6.(1) by waiving the requirement for a fire-resistance rating on the basis that the floor area is sprinklered throughout.
This is to limit the probability that a fire will not be controlled or suppressed, which could lead to the spread of fire into the corridor, or from the corridor to another part of the building, which could lead to:
  • delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons, and
  • fire emergency response operations being delayed or ineffective, which could lead to:
    • delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders, and
    • the spread of fire to other parts of the building, which could lead to harm to persons.
