Application
Application 1: 
Minimum fire-resistance rating of fire separations that separate stages for theatrical performances and ancillary spaces, including workshops, dressing rooms and storage areas, from the seating area.
This applies to assembly occupancies in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to:
  • tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1), and
  • buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.10.1.2.(2).
Exceptions: 
except:
  • for a proscenium opening protected with:
    • a sprinkler deluge system conforming to the requirements of NFPA 13 “Installation of Sprinkler Systems,”
    • an unframed fire curtain if the opening is not more than 20 m wide, or
    • a semi-rigid fire curtain if the opening is more than 20 m wide,
  • as stated in Sentence 3.3.2.13.(6), which applies when a building is sprinklered and a sprinkler deluge system is installed at the boundary between the stage and the seating area,
  • as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(1), which prohibits air-supported structures from being located above the first storey on any building,
  • as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(2), which prohibits air-supported structures from being used for classrooms or for Groups B, C, or Group F, Division 1 major occupancies, and
  • as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(3), which requires air-supported structures to be designed as open floor spaces without interior walls, mezzanines, intermediate floors or similar construction.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread from a stage or ancillary spaces to the seating area, which could lead to harm to persons in the seating area.
