Application 1: 
Interior flight of stairs with fewer than 3 risers, where the stairs:
  • are not less than 900 mm wide,
  • are illuminated at all times that occupants are on the premises, and
  • have a handrail on each side.
This applies to Group A, Division 2 occupancies used for serving food and beverages, in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to:
  • tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1), and
  • buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.10.1.2.(2).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To exempt steps in an establishment serving food and beverages from the application of Sentence 3.4.6.2.(1), as referenced by Sentence 3.3.1.14.(1), on the basis that additional measures [minimum width, illumination and handrails] are incorporated to assist persons to use the steps safely, thus minimizing the risk of injuries.
