Objective	OP1 Fire Protection of the Building

Application	Application 1: Sprinkler protection, of a building that includes a contained use area, as required by Sentence 3.3.3.7.(3), where: Articles 3.2.2.20. to 3.2.2.83. do not require the installation of an automatic sprinkler system, the building is designed so that during a period of 2 h after the start of a fire in the contained use area, other fire compartments will not contain more than 1% by volume of contaminated air from the contained use area, the building is designed so that during a period of 2 h after the start of a fire in another part of the building, the contained use area will not contain more than 1% by volume of contaminated air from the other part of the building, all doors are designed to be remotely released in conformance with Sentence 3.3.1.13.(6), and the contained use area does not contain any rooms lined with combustible padding. This applies to care or detention occupancy in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A. Application 2: This also applies to tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1).

Intent	Intent 1: To supersede the requirements for building sprinkler protection in Sentence 3.3.3.7.(3) if certain conditions are met. This is to limit the probability that: smoke will build up in the contained use area or in other fire compartments, emergency responders will be delayed in gaining access to the contained use area, which could lead to delays or ineffectiveness in carrying out fire emergency response operations, which could lead to the spread of fire, and the fire load will be excessive, which could lead to the spread of fire. This is to limit the probability of damage to the building.
