Application 1: 
Guard protection and design, with respect to position and lateral load, of a window in a stairway, where:
  • the distance measured vertically between the bottom of the window and a line drawn through the outside edges of the stair nosings is less than 900 mm, or
  • the window extends to less than 1 070 mm above the landing.
This applies, in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, to:

  • ramps, stairways and passageways used by the public as access to exits, as stated in Appendix Note A-3.4.6.,
  • tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1),
  • stairs in a means of egress from a roof, where a roof is used or intended for an occupant load of more than 60, as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.3.(4),
  • ramps and stairways, as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.14.(1), and
  • ramps in a barrier-free path of travel, as stated in Clause 3.8.3.4.(1)(e).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that window glass will fail [break or splinter] if a person hits or bumps into it, which could lead to:
  • harm to the person, and
  • the person falling through the window, which could lead to harm to the person.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that a person will fall through a window opening, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 3: 
To expand the application of Articles 4.1.5.15. and 4.1.5.17. to a window.
