Application | Application 1: An electrically powered revolving door used as an exit, where:
- the door leaves will collapse and stop automatic rotation of
the door system and not obstruct the doorway if a force not more than that
specified in Sentence 3.4.6.15.(2) is applied at the centre of a door
leaf,
- the door leaves are capable of being opened from inside the building without requiring keys, special devices, or
specialized knowledge of the door opening mechanism,
- a permanent sign, whose centre line is between 1 000
mm and 1 500 mm above the floor, is placed on each face
of each door leaf indicating the method for collapsing the door leaf in an
emergency, and
- glass used for door leaves and enclosure panels is safety glass
conforming to:
- CAN/CGSB-12.1-M, “Tempered or Laminated Safety Glass,”
or
- CAN/CGSB-12.11-M, “Wired Safety Glass.”
This applies, in buildings described
in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, to:
Application 2: This also applies to:
- ramps, stairways and passageways used by the public as access to exits in buildings described
in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, as stated in Appendix Note A-3.4.6.,
- tents and air-supported structures,
as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1), and
- revolving doors used in exits in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.9.6.4.(3).
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
- Sentence 3.1.6.2.(1), which prohibits air-supported
structures from being located above the first
storey on any building,
- Sentence 3.1.6.2.(2), which prohibits air-supported
structures from being used for classrooms or for Groups B, C, or Group
F, Division 1 major occupancies,
- Sentence 3.1.6.2.(3), which requires air-supported
structures to be designed as open floor spaces without interior walls, mezzanines, intermediate floors or similar construction,
- Sentence 3.3.1.3.(5), which applies to rooftop enclosures,
- Sentence 3.4.2.2.(2), which applies to mezzanines that:
- are not required to terminate at a vertical fire
separation [see Article 3.2.8.1.],
- are not intended for an occupant load more
than 60,
- do not exceed the area limits for rooms and suites in Table 3.4.2.2., and
- have limited travel distances to egress doors or stairs, and
- Sentence 3.4.2.2.(3), which applies to at least half
of the required means of egress from a mezzanine if the mezzanine is
not required to terminate at a fire separation as
permitted by Sentence 3.2.8.2.(1).
|
Intent | Intent 1: To supersede the requirements of Sentence 3.4.6.14.(1),
which would otherwise require certain measures, and permit electrically powered
revolving doors if certain conditions are met. This is
to limit the probability that:
- [Clauses 3.4.6.14.(3)(a) et (b)] use of the doorway in an emergency situation
will lead to congestion or the buildup of persons at the doorway, which could
lead to:
- persons being crushed, which could lead to harm to persons,
and
- delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place,
which could lead to harm to persons,
- [Clause 3.4.6.14.(3)(d)] persons will not be familiar with
the method of door opening in an emergency situation, which could lead to
delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could
lead to harm to persons, and
- [Clause 3.4.6.14.(3)(e)] glass used in the construction
of the doors will not meet proper standards, which could lead to the glass
not performing in the way intended in a normal use situation, which could
lead to failure of the glass [e.g. breaking or splintering], which could lead
to harm to persons.
