Application | Application 1: Electromagnetic locks on exit doors,
where:
- the locks do not incorporate latches, pins or other similar
devices,
- the building is equipped with a
fire alarm system,
- the locking device, and all similar devices in the access
to exit leading to the exit door, release upon
actuation of the fire alarm signal,
- the locking device releases immediately upon loss of power
controlling the electromagnetic locking mechanism and its associated auxiliary
controls,
- the locking device releases immediately upon actuation of a
manually operated switch readily accessible only to authorized personnel,
- a force of not more than 90 N applied to the door
opening hardware initiates an irreversible process that will release the locking
device within 15 s and not relock until the door has been opened,
- upon release, the locking device must be reset manually by
the actuation of the switch referred to in Clause 3.4.6.15.(4)(d), and
- a legible sign is permanently mounted on the exit door
to indicate that the locking device will release within 15 s of
applying pressure to the door-opening hardware.
This applies, in buildings described
in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, to:
Application 2: This also applies to:
- ramps, stairways and passageways used by the public as access to exits in buildings described
in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A, as stated in Appendix Note A-3.4.6.,
- tents and air-supported structures,
as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1), and
- exit doors and doors to suites,
including exterior doors to dwelling units,
in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.9.6.7.(1).
Exceptions:
except:
- for doors leading directly from a high
hazard industrial occupancy,
- as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(1), which prohibits air-supported structures from being located above
the first storey on any building,
- as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(2), which prohibits air-supported structures from being used for classrooms
or for Groups B, C, or Group F, Division 1 major occupancies,
- as stated in Sentence 3.1.6.2.(3), which requires air-supported structures to be designed as open floor
spaces without interior walls, mezzanines, intermediate
floors or similar construction,
- as stated in Sentence 3.3.1.3.(5), which applies to rooftop
enclosures,
- as stated in Sentence 3.4.2.2.(2), which applies to mezzanines that:
- are not required to terminate at a vertical fire
separation [see Article 3.2.8.1.],
- are not intended for an occupant load more
than 60,
- do not exceed the area limits for rooms and suites in Table 3.4.2.2., and
- have limited travel distances to egress doors or stairs,
- as stated in Sentence 3.4.2.2.(3), which applies to at
least half of the required means of egress from
a mezzanine if the mezzanine is
not required to terminate at a fire separation as
permitted by Sentence 3.2.8.2.(1), and
- as stated in Sentence 3.8.3.3.(7), which applies to barrier-free design in buildings described
in Sentence 3.8.1.1.(1).
