Application
Application 1: 
Minimum fire-resistance rating of fire separations that separate vertical service spaces from all other portions of each adjacent storey, in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to chutes and shafts in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.10.1.2.(7), except where the chute or shaft is entirely contained within a dwelling unit.
Exceptions: 
except as exempted in:
  • Subsection 3.5.3., which applies to a vertical service space used as an elevator hoistway or containing a dumbwaiter, and
  • Sentence 3.6.3.3.(2), which applies to a shaft containing a linen chute or refuse chute.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread from one storey to another storey by means of a vertical service space, which could lead to harm to persons in the other storey.
