Application 1: 
Separation of patients' sleeping rooms from the remainder of the floor area in hospitals or nursing homes.
This applies to care or detention occupancy in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Exceptions: 
except as exempted in:
  • Sentence 3.3.3.5.(10), which applies to a group of intercommunicating patients' rooms, and
  • Sentence 3.3.3.5.(11), which applies to roller latches on doors.
Application 2: 
This also applies to tents and air-supported structures, as stated in Sentences 3.1.6.1.(1) and 9.10.1.2.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that smoke will spread from a patient's sleeping room to the remainder of the floor area, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that smoke will spread from a patient's sleeping room to the remainder of the floor area, which could lead to fire emergency response operations being delayed or ineffective, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
