ObjectiveOA1 Barrier-Free Path of Travel

Application
Application 1: 
Minimum unobstructed width of every barrier-free path of travel, as stated in Sentences 3.8.1.2.(1) and (2), 3.8.1.4.(1), 3.8.2.1.(1) and (2), and 3.8.2.2.(1), and Article 3.8.2.3.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 3.8.1.1.(1), which applies to:
    • houses, including semi-detached houses, duplexes, triplexes, townhouses, row houses, and boarding houses,
    • buildings of Group F, Division 1 major occupancy, and
    • buildings that are not intended to be occupied on a daily or full-time basis, including automatic telephone exchanges, pumphouses and substations,
  • Sentences 3.8.2.1.(1) and (2), 3.8.3.3.(10), 3.8.3.8.(1) et 3.8.3.13.(1), which apply to certain doorways,
  • Sentence 3.8.1.3.(4), which applies to barrier-free paths of travel that are more than 30 m long,
  • Sentence 3.8.3.2.(1), which applies to exterior walks,
  • Sentence 3.8.3.4.(1), which applies to ramps,
  • Sentence 3.8.3.10.(2), which applies to urinal approaches, and
  • Clause 3.8.3.11.(1)(c), which applies to lavatory approaches.
Application 2: 
This also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.5.2.1.(1).
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Article 9.5.2.3., which applies to apartment buildings.

Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that a person using a manual wheelchair or other manual mobility assistance device will not be able to circulate within a building without the assistance of another person.
