ObjectiveOP2 Structural Sufficiency of the Building
Attribution
Application
Application 1:
Design of foundation systems, including ground floors of buildings, in locations susceptible to ground movements due to swelling and shrinking soils.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A] that are required to be designed to the requirements of Part 4.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability that the design of foundations, including ground floors, will not take into account the dimensional changes in soils, for example due to soil dewatering by trees, which could lead to excessive displacement of ground, which could lead to:
  • damage to the building, and
  • excessive distortion of the building, which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
