Material used as backfill or fill for supporting footings, foundations and floors on grade.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A] that are required to be designed to the requirements of Part 4.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that backfill supporting foundations or ground floors will undergo large volume changes, which could lead to excessive displacements of the foundations or ground floors, which could lead to:
  • damage to the building, and
  • excessive distortion of the building, which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
