Application 1: 
Properties and preparation of soil or rock directly below shallow foundations.
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A] that are required to be designed to the requirements of Part 4.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that the condition of soil or rock directly below a shallow foundation will not be in accordance with the assumptions used for the design of the foundation system, which could lead to excessive displacement of the foundation, which could lead to:
  • damage to the building, and
  • excessive building distortion, which could impede the use and occupancy of the building.
