Application
Application 1: 
Drainage for exterior foundation walls and floors-on-ground.
This applies to building materials, components or assemblies and their interfaces described in Sentence 5.1.2.1.(1) that are installed in buildings to which Part 5 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 5].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Sentence 5.8.1.1.(1), which applies where:
  • the foundation wall or floor is subject to continuous hydrostatic pressure, or
  • drainage can be shown to be unnecessary.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of:
  • inadequate drainage of below-ground assemblies, or
  • excessive moisture loading on the assemblies.
This is to limit the probability of moisture ingress from the ground, which could lead to deterioration, which could lead to compromised structural integrity of the separators or of elements supported or protected by the separators.
Intent 2: 
For floors supported on ground, to limit the probability of reducing the soil-bearing capacity due to saturation, which could lead to structural failure, which could lead to harm to persons.
