ObjectiveOS1 Fire Safety
Attribution
[F20-OS1.1] Applies to concrete that supports or is used in chimneys or fireplaces.
Application
Application 1:
Cast-in-place concrete that is not required to be reinforced that is used in:
  • footings, foundation walls, walls, columns, grade beams and piers,
  • crawl space ground cover,
  • basement floors, including floors of basement garages, subject to hydrostatic pressure or providing lateral resistance to foundation walls,
  • exterior steps providing structural support (to guards or handrails, for example), and
  • fireplaces and chimneys.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability of:
  • interruption of the hydration process,
  • freezing and expansion of internal water, and
  • over-watering due to the melting of ice.
This is to limit the probability of the failure of internal bonds in the concrete, which could lead to reduced compressive strength, which could lead to an inadequate resistance to:
  • expected environmental or structural loads, or
  • air and moisture transfer.
Where concrete supports or is used in chimneys or fireplaces, this is to limit the probability of the compromised integrity of the chimney or fireplace, which could lead to the ignition of combustible building components.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
