Application 1: 
Maximum horizontal projection of obstructions located within 1 980 mm of floors of exit passageways, corridors used by the public or public corridors, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • for means of egress that are within dwelling units or that serve not more than one dwelling unit, as stated in Sentence 9.9.5.1.(1),
  • as stated in Sentence 9.9.5.3.(2), which applies when the obstruction extends to less than 680 mm above the floor, and
  • as stated in Sentence 3.8.1.3.(1), which applies to barrier-free design in buildings described in Sentence 3.8.1.1.(1) [see Sentence 9.5.2.1.(1)].

To limit the probability that a person with a visual disability will hit an obstruction in a corridor that cannot be detected by a cane, which could lead to harm to persons.
