Application
Application 1: 
Fixtures, turnstiles or construction projecting within the required width of exits, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • for means of egress that are within dwelling units or that serve not more than one dwelling unit, as stated in Sentence 9.9.5.1.(1),
  • as stated in Sentence 9.9.6.1.(2), which applies to exit doors that decrease the required exit width by not more than 100 mm in exit corridors, and by not more than 50 mm for other exit facilities,
  • as stated in Sentence 9.9.6.1.(3), which applies to the maximum reduction in the width of the path of travel caused by the swing of doors,
  • as stated in Sentence 9.8.7.6.(1), which applies to handrails and constructions below handrails, including handrail supports and stair stringers, that project not more than 100 mm into the required width of stairways, and
  • as stated in Sentence 3.8.1.3.(1), which applies to barrier-free design in buildings described in Sentence 3.8.1.1.(1) [see Sentence 9.5.2.1.(1)].

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that obstructions in an exit will reduce the exit width, which could lead to insufficient exit width to permit efficient egress in an emergency situation, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
