Objective | OS1 Fire Safety |
Attribution | |
Application | Application 1: Fire-resistance rating of fire separations between lobbies referred to in Sentence 9.9.8.5.(1) and adjacent occupancies that
are permitted to open into the lobbies [see Sentence 9.9.8.5.(3)], where
the lobby and the adjacent occupancies are sprinklered, in buildings to
which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application
of Part 9]. Application 2: This also applies to certain mezzanines,
as stated in Sentence 9.9.8.6.(1). |

Intent | Intent 1: To supersede the requirements of Sentences (3) and 9.9.4.2.(1) and (2) by waiving the requirement for
the fire separation to have a fire-resistance rating, if certain conditions
are met [i.e. lobby and adjacent occupancies are sprinklered].
This is to limit the probability that a fire will spread into the
lobby from an adjacent occupancy, which could lead to untenable conditions
in the exit, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons
to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons.
