Application 1: 
Openings in [wall and ceiling] membranes that form part of assemblies that are required to have a fire-resistance rating, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except:
  • where the assembly has been tested and rated for such openings,
  • as stated in Sentence 9.10.5.1.(2), which applies to openings for electrical and similar service outlet boxes, where such outlet boxes are tightly fitted, and
  • as stated in Sentence 9.10.5.1.(4), which applies to openings that lead to ducts within a ceiling space, where the ducts, the amount of openings and their protection conform to the requirements of Appendix D.

To limit the probability that openings in rated wall or ceiling membranes will contribute to the spread of fire within the wall or ceiling space, which could lead to the premature failure or collapse of the wall or ceiling assembly, which could lead to harm to persons.

To limit the probability that openings in rated wall or ceiling membranes will contribute to the spread of fire within the wall or ceiling space, which could lead to the premature failure or collapse of the wall or ceiling assembly, which could lead to the spread of fire from one compartment to another, which could lead to harm to persons.
