9.10.5.1.(2) | Application | Intent |
OS1 | OP1 |
Objective | OS1 Fire Safety |
Attribution | |
Application | Application 1: Openings for electrical and similar service outlet
boxes that pierce walls or ceiling membranes forming part of an assembly required
to have a fire-resistance rating, where such
outlet boxes are tightly fitted. This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].

Intent | Intent 1: To exempt openings for electrical and similar service outlet
boxes from the requirements of Sentence 9.10.5.1.(1), which would otherwise
not permit openings in rated wall or ceiling membranes, if certain conditions
are met [i.e. the outlet boxes are tightly fitted]. This
is to limit the probability that the openings will contribute to the spread
of fire within the wall or ceiling space, which could lead to the premature
failure or collapse of the wall or ceiling assembly, which could lead to harm
to persons.
