Application 1: 
Floor assemblies as fire separations, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentences 9.10.9.1.(1) and 9.10.9.4.(2), which apply to floor assemblies that are contained within dwelling units,
  • Sentence 9.10.9.4.(3), which applies to
    • floor assemblies for which no fire-resistance rating is required by Subsection 9.10.8., and
    • floors of mezzanines not required to be counted as storeys in Articles 9.10.4.1. and 9.10.4.2., and
  • Sentence 9.10.9.4.(4), which applies to floors above crawl spaces that are not required by Article 9.10.8.9. to be constructed as basements.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread from a lower storey of a building to an upper storey during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons in the upper storey.
