Application
Application 1: 
Minimum fire-resistance rating of fire separations that separate public corridors from the remainder of the building, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.10.9.15.(2), which applies to occupancies other than residential occupancies, where
    • the floor area is sprinklered,
    • the sprinkler system is electrically supervised, and
    • operation of the sprinkler system causes a signal to be transmitted to the fire department, and
  • Sentence 9.10.9.15.(3), which applies to occupancies other than residential occupancies, where
    • the floor area is sprinklered,
    • the sprinkler system is electrically supervised,
    • operation of the sprinkler system causes a signal to be transmitted to the fire department, and
    • the corridor exceeds 5 m in width.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread into a public corridor, or from a public corridor into a suite, which could lead to damage to the building.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread into a public corridor, which could lead to delays or ineffectiveness in fire emergency response operations, which could lead to the spread of fire to other parts of the building, which could lead to damage to the building.
