Application
Application 1: 
Vertical fire separation of portions of floor areas or mezzanines that do not terminate at an exterior wall, a firewall or a vertical shaft, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.10.1.2.(6), which applies to openings through floors that are not protected by shafts or closures,
  • Sentence 9.10.9.5.(1), which applies to interconnected floor spaces, and
  • Sentence 9.10.12.1.(2), which applies to mezzanines that are not required to be considered as storeys by Articles 9.10.4.1. and 9.10.4.2.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread from:
  • a lower floor level to upper floor levels, or
  • a floor area into exit stairs.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • delays or ineffectiveness in fire suppression operations, which could lead to the spread of fire, and
  • delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
