Application
Application 1: 
Minimum fire resistance of material protecting combustible wall framing, finishes or cabinets that are:
  • within 450 mm [measured horizontally] of the area where a gas or electric range is to be located, and
  • above the level of the heating elements or burners.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.10.22.3.(2), which applies to countertop splash boards or back plates that extend above the level of heating elements or burners, and
  • Sentence 9.10.22.3.(3), which applies to cabinetry located not less than 450 mm above the level of the heating elements or burners.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that heat radiating from a range or from open fire will ignite nearby framing, finishes or cabinetry, which could lead to the spread of fire, which could lead to harm to persons.
Intent 2: 
To supersede the requirements stated in CSA B149.1, referred to in Sentence 9.10.22.1.(1), with regard to natural gas ranges, in cases of conflict.
