except as stated in Sentence 9.20.1.1.(2), which applies to buildings other than described above, or where the masonry
is designed for specified loads on the basis of ultimate and serviceability
limit states.

Intent | Intent 1: To limit the probability of an inadequate drip edge or return
up walls, which could lead to precipitation or meltwater ingress.
Where masonry veneer is installed to provide the required noncombustible
cladding, this is to limit the probability of deterioration, which could lead
to compromised fire resistance of the assembly, which could lead to harm to
persons.
