Application
Application 1: 
Nailing of lumber framing, in wood-frame constructions to which Section 9.23. applies [see Sentence 9.23.1.1.(1) for application of Section 9.23.].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.23.3.4.(2), which applies to the fastening of bottom wall plates in exterior walls to floor framing by other acceptable means, and
  • Sentence 9.23.9.7.(1), which applies to tail joists or header joists that are supported by suitable joist hangers.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of an inadequate length and number, or excessive spacing, of nails, which could lead to an inability to resist expected gravity and lateral loads.
This is to limit the probability of compromised structural integrity, which could lead to:
  • fastened elements detaching from supporting members, which could lead to elements falling from the building,
  • structural collapse of wood-frame construction, or
  • where wood-frame construction supports or is part of an environmental separator, the excessive deformation, displacement or failure of required environmental separation elements, which could lead to deterioration, which could lead to further compromised structural integrity.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
