Application 1: 
Orientation of wall studs in gable ends of roofs that contain only unfinished space, or in non-loadbearing interior walls where the minimum stud size, maximum stud spacing, and maximum unsupported stud height do not exceed the limits stated in Table 9.23.10.1., in wood-frame constructions to which Section 9.23. applies [see Sentence 9.23.1.1.(1) for application of Section 9.23.].

Intent
Intent 1: 
To modify the application of Sentence 9.23.10.3.(1) and allow studs to be installed 'on the flat' in constructions where the studs are subject to limited gravity and lateral loads.
