Application
Application 1: 
Materials for ducts, duct connectors, associated fittings and plenums used in air duct distribution systems serving heating systems in which the rated heat input does not exceed 120 kW and serving only one dwelling unit, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.33.6.2.(2), which applies to ducts, associated fittings and plenums that are permitted to contain combustible materials,
  • Sentence 9.33.6.2.(3), which applies to flame-spread and smoke developed criteria for duct sealants,
  • Sentence 9.33.6.2.(4), which applies to duct connectors that contain combustible materials and are used between ducts and air outlet units,
  • Sentence 9.33.6.2.(5), which applies to combustible ducts that are part of a duct system carrying only ventilation air and are contained entirely within a dwelling unit,
  • Sentence 9.33.6.2.(6), which applies to combustible ducts that are part of a duct system carrying only return air and that are contained entirely within a dwelling unit,
  • Sentences 9.33.6.14.(2) and (3), which applies to noncombustible ducts, and
  • Article 3.6.4.3., which applies to concealed spaces used as plenums within floor assemblies or within roof assemblies.
Application 2: 
This also applies to certain ventilation ducts and their fittings, as stated in Sentence 9.32.3.11.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of the ignition of combustible building elements, which could lead to the spread of fire and smoke throughout the building, which could lead to harm to persons.
