Application
Application 1:
Warm-air supply systems serving heating systems in which the rated heat input does not exceed 120 kW and serving only one dwelling unit, in residential buildings built on concrete slabs-on-ground to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Application 2:
This also applies to ventilation ducts and their fittings, as stated in Sentence 9.32.3.11.(1).

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability of an inadequate distribution of heat to slab edges, which could lead to an inadequate warming of the perimeter of slabs-on-ground.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • the freezing of soil beneath slab edges, which could lead to the formation of ice lenses, which could lead to soil movement, which could lead to structural damage to the slab and the supported superstructure, which could lead to the excessive deformation, displacement or failure of required environmental separation elements, or
  • an inadequate control of floor temperatures, which could lead to:
    • excessively low floor temperatures, or
    • condensation of water vapour on the surface of the slab, which could lead to rotting or corrosion, which could lead to:
      • the generation of pollutants from biological growth or from materials that become unstable on wetting, or
      • the deterioration of building elements.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • negative effects on the air quality of indoor spaces,
  • the inadequate thermal comfort of persons, or
  • contact with moisture.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
