Application 1: 
Maximum flame-spread rating of insulation and coverings on piping, in heating or air-conditioning systems serving only one dwelling unit, that is located in rooms and spaces of buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.33.8.2.(6), which applies to insulation and coverings used on piping that is:
    • within concealed spaces in walls,
    • in floor slabs, or
    • enclosed in noncombustible raceways or conduits.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of the rapid spread of flame or smoke throughout rooms or spaces other than duct-like concealed spaces, which could lead to harm to persons.
