Application
Application 1:
System considerations for walls forming part of the Seismic Force Resisting System of buildings, in seismic areas where IEFvSa(1.0) is greater than 0.25 and where the fundamental lateral period, Ta, of the building is greater than or equal to 1.0 s.
Exceptions:
except as stated in Sentence 4.1.8.1.(1), which applies to areas where the spectral response acceleration amplified for site conditions equals the floor levels found in low seismicity regions with Site Class C (i.e. very dense soil and soft rock).
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A and to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that are required to be designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 4.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability that walls forming part of the Seismic Force Resisting System will not be continuous from their top to the foundation and will not contain an in-plane or out-of-plane discontinuity (irregularity Types 4 and 5 in Table 4.1.8.6.) in areas where strong ground motions affect structures of moderate to long periods in particular, which could lead to the Seismic Force Resisting System being unable to function effectively during strong earthquake motions, which could lead to structural failure, which could lead to harm to persons.
