Application
Application 1:
Construction, control or expansion joints, in building assemblies that separate interior space from the ground, in buildings to which Part 5 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 5].
Exceptions:
except:
  • where the required moisture protection material is capable of bridging construction, control and expansion joints,
  • as stated in Sentence 5.8.2.1.(2), which applies where a lack of resistance to moisture transfer from the ground will not adversely affect health, safety, the intended use of the building or the operation of building services, and
  • as stated in Sentence 5.8.2.2.(7), which applies to assemblies that:
    • are constructed of cast-in-place concrete,
    • have a drainage layer installed between the assembly and the soil to reduce moisture loading, and
    • are not exposed to hydrostatic pressure.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability of inadequate detailing and sealing of joints, which could lead to discontinuity of protection at joints, which could lead to moisture ingress from the ground, which could lead to deterioration, which could lead to compromised structural integrity of the separators or of elements supported or protected by the separators, which could lead to structural failure, which could lead to harm to persons.
