Application
Application 1: 
Minimum clear height over interior and exterior landings, for buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Sentence 9.8.6.1.(2), which applies to landings for ramps in a barrier-free path of travel.
Application 2: 
This also applies to stairs or ramps within dwelling units in buildings to which Part 3 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 3], as stated in Sentence 3.3.4.7.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of insufficient head room over landings:
  • in dwelling units (1.95 m), where occupants are likely to be intimately familiar with their surroundings, or
  • in other than dwelling units (2.05 m), where occupants might not be familiar with their surroundings.
This is to limit the probability of users accidentally contacting the ceiling or protrusions from the ceiling with their head, which could lead to:
  • persons falling, or
  • persons falling in an emergency, which could lead to delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
