Application
Application 1:
Means of egress leading to exits from mezzanines, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], where:
  • mezzanines are not required to terminate at vertical fire separations, as permitted by Sentence 9.10.12.1.(2),
  • mezzanines have an occupant load not more than 60,
  • mezzanines have an area that does not exceed the area limits stated in Table 9.9.7.4., and
  • the distance limits of Table 9.9.7.4. measured along the path of travel are not exceeded from any point on the mezzanine to
    • an egress door serving the space that the mezzanine overlooks if the space is served by a single egress door, or
    • an egress stairway leading to an access to exit in the space below if that space is required to be served by 2 or more egress doorways in conformance with Sentence 9.9.7.4.(1).
Exceptions:
as permitted in Sentence 9.9.8.6.(3), which applies to one of the means of egress from a mezzanine that is not required to terminate at a fire separation, as permitted by Sentence 9.10.12.1.(2), and that exceeds the limits stated in Sentence (2).

Intent
Intent 1:
To exempt exits serving certain mezzanines from the application of Sentence 9.9.8.6.(1), which would otherwise require exits on the same basis as required for floor areas, on the basis that the mezzanines are relatively small and have a limited occupant load and travel distance, thus allowing occupants to safely evacuate through the main floor level of the storey containing the mezzanine.
