Application
Application 1: 
Portion of any soffit or other surface enclosing a projection that is:
  • less than 2.5 m vertically above a window or door, and
  • less than 1.2 m from either side of the window or door.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], where:
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.10.12.4.(4), which applies when the soffit or other surface is completely separated from the remainder of the attic or roof space by fire stopping, and
  • Sentence 9.10.12.4.(5), which applies where all suites spanned by a common attic or roof space or situated above or below the projecting floor are sprinklered.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that fire will spread from a suite through openings [e.g. windows or doors] in the exterior wall and then through openings in soffits, which could lead to the spread of fire through the common attic or roof space or the floor above to other suites, which could lead to harm to persons.
