Application
Application 1:
Installation of fire dampers in ducts that penetrate assemblies required to be fire separations with a fire-resistance rating.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions:
except as exempted in:
  • Sentence 9.10.5.1.(4), which applies to openings that lead to ducts within a membrane ceiling that forms part of an assembly assigned a fire-resistance rating,
  • Sentence 9.10.13.13.(2), which applies to noncombustible branch ducts that pierce a required fire separation where the duct
    • has a melting point not below 760°C
    • has a cross-sectional area less than 130 cm2, and
    • supplies only air-conditioning units or combined air-conditioning and heating units discharging air at not more than 1.2 m above the floor,
  • Sentence 9.10.13.13.(3), which applies to noncombustible branch ducts that pierce a required fire separation around an exhaust duct riser in which the air flow is upward,
  • Sentence 9.10.13.13.(4), which applies to noncombustible ducts that penetrate a fire separation separating a vertical service space from the remainder of the building, and

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability that fire will spread from one fire compartment to another fire compartment through openings in a fire separation, which could lead to harm to persons in the other fire compartment.
Intent 2:
To expand the application of Articles 3.1.8.4. and 3.1.8.9. to Part 9 buildings.
