Objective	OP3 Protection of Adjacent Buildings from Fire

Application	Application 1: Construction requirements stated in Sentence 9.10.15.5.(1) [fire-resistance rating, type of construction and type of cladding] regarding exposing building faces and exterior walls located above exposing building faces that enclose an attic or roof space, where the exposing building face : has a limiting distance of 1.2 m or more, has a fire-resistance rating of not less than 45 min, where the limiting distance is less than 1.2 m but not less than 0.6 m, or has a fire-resistance rating of not less than 45 min and is clad with noncombustible material, where the limiting distance is less than 0.6 m. This applies to buildings to which part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that contain only dwelling units and have no dwelling unit above another dwelling unit. Exceptions: except as stated in: Sentence 9.10.15.3.(1), which applies to the calculation of the limiting distance where there are inadequate firefighting capabilities, Sentence 9.10.15.5.(3), which applies to cladding on exposing building faces and exterior walls located above exposing building faces that enclose an attic or roof space where the limiting distance is less than 0.6 m, and the cladding conforms to Subsection 9.27.13., is installed without furring members over at least 12.7 mm gypsum sheathing or over masonry, has a flame-spread rating not greater than 25 when tested in accordance with Sentence 3.1.12.1.(2), and does not exceed 2 mm in thickness exclusive of fasteners, joints and local reinforcements, and Sentence 9.10.15.5.(4), which applies to the requirements regarding fire-resistance rating, type of construction and type of cladding for exposing building faces and exterior walls located above exposing building faces that enclose an attic or roof space of dwelling units facing a detached garage or accessory building, where: the detached garage or accessory building serves only one dwelling unit the detached garage or accessory building is located on the same property as the dwelling unit, and the dwelling unit served by the detached garage or accessory building is the only major occupancy on the property.

Intent	Intent 1: To supersede the requirements of Sentence 9.10.15.5.(1), which would otherwise impose certain construction requirements relating to maximum area of unprotected openings, minimum fire-resistance rating, type of construction and cladding, if certain conditions are met. This is to limit the probability that: an exposing building face will have insufficient fire resistance, which could lead to the spread of fire from the subject building to an adjacent building during the time required for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to damage to the adjacent building, and an exposing building face will be ignited and contribute to, or be involved in, a fire, which could lead to the spread of fire from the subject building to an adjacent building during the time required for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to damage to the adjacent building.
