Attribution
[F20,F21-OS2.3] Applies to elements that support or are part of an environmental separator.
Application
Application 1: 
Minimum width of concrete footings that rest on gravel, sand or silt where the water table level is located less than the width of the footings below the bearing surface, for foundations or loadbearing columns, for buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], where the foundations are not subject to surcharge and:
  • the footings support
    • foundation walls of masonry, concrete, or flat insulating concrete form walls,
    • above-ground walls of masonry, flat insulating concrete form walls or light wood-frame construction, and
    • floors and roofs of light wood-frame construction [see Article 9.4.2.1.],
  • the span of supported joists does not exceed 4.9 m, and
  • the specified live load on any floor supported by the footings does not exceed 2.4 kPa.
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.15.1.2.(1), which applies to foundations and footings for buildings erected on permafrost,
  • Sentence 9.15.3.4.(2), which applies to joist spans exceeding 4.9 m in buildings with light wood-frame walls, floors and roofs,
  • Article 9.15.3.5., which applies to adjustments to footings for exterior walls,
  • Article 9.15.3.6., which applies to adjustments to footings for interior walls, and
  • Article 9.15.3.7., which applies to adjustments to footings for columns.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of an inadequate footing width, which could lead to reduced friction among soil particles, which could lead to an inadequate bearing strength of the soil beneath the footings, which could lead to compressive failure and excessive settlement of the soil, which could lead to an inability to support vertical building loads or lateral earth loads.
This is to limit the probability of compromised structural integrity, which could lead to:
  • structural failure, or
  • where elements support or are part of an environmental separator, the displacement or failure of required environmental separation elements, which could lead to the deterioration of building elements.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
